Most of you probably know about Mama’s Used Cars thanks to Elizabeth “Mama” Armstrong. She has been the face of our TV ads and billboards for years and anyone driving down Savannah Highway has seen the huge inflatable Mama smiling down at them.

Did you also know that she does not actually own Mama’s Used Cars? Sometimes even we’re surprised!

Armstrong grew up in the aftermath of the Great Depression. Like many others, Elizabeth’s family was not well off. “There were no rich people then,” she explained. “And if there were, I sure didn’t know them.”

Elizabeth met her future husband at a local playground, and married him at the age of 21. When he returned from a Navy assignment to the Northeast Atlantic, Mike and Elizabeth settled down, eventually having five children, four girls and a boy.
At 46, Armstrong found a job as a secretary. This profession certainly paid the bills for 13 years, but she decided to change to baby-sitting when she could not stand being a secretary anymore!

One of the parents she babysat for was Manly and Jan Eubank, owners of Palmetto Ford. Because of the warmth and calm she displayed when watching their daughter, Manly asked Armstrong about featuring in a new commercial. They needed a mother figure and he thought she was perfect for the role.

She was not convinced but after a little encouragement, she gave in. Since then, Elizabeth has filmed more than 200 commercials for Mama’s Used Cars, becoming somewhat of a celebrity in Lowcountry. She has thrown out the first pitch at a RiverDogs game, thrown the opening jump ball for a College of Charleston basketball game, and ridden in the Christmas parade!

Thank you Elizabeth, we could not ask for a better person to represent Mama’s Used Cars!
