Preparing Your Car for Winter

Winter is just around the corner, so it’s time ring in the season with some cold-weather car maintenance. Since wintertime puts a particular set of stresses on your vehicle, you should take the time to appropriately prepare your vehicle and keep it running in tip-top shape.
  • Check your oil: As fall recedes, take the time to check your oil and make sure you have adequate amounts for the winter season. If you’re due for an oil change, consider opting for an engine oil that is designed for the wintertime, as it will provide better performance in low temperatures than standard oil.
  • Replace your windshield wiper blades: In general, experts recommend that you change your wiper blades following the hot summer months. Hot weather dries out and cracks your wiper blades, causing them to be less effective at clearing your windshield. Since visibility is so important in the wintertime, it’s a good idea to replace your wiper blades at this time of year.
  • Check your tires: Although a seemingly simple part of your vehicle, your tires are essential for maintaining traction and control on the road. Before winter, you will want to check your tire treads and make sure that they are not overly worn. If they are, they will not be able to maintain as much traction on wet, snowy, and icy roads. You will also want to check your tires’ pressure, which can affect handling and efficiency, as fluctuating exterior temperatures can cause changes in pressure.
  • Check your fluid levels: As a general tune-up before winter, check your car’s fluid levels. You should check your windshield wiper fluid, coolant, anti-freeze, power-steering fluid, and brake fluid.
  • Check your battery: Since weak or failing batteries have even more difficulty functioning in the cold, you will want to check your battery before the wintertime.

Of course, if you have any more advanced problems, you should address those as well before winter starts in earnest. Bring your vehicle in to Mama's Used Cars, and we will be happy to help you.
